Wilmington is the center of attraction in southeastern North Carolina. The city and its local organizations provide residents with a wide spectrum of activities, both cultural and recreational. There are a number of community events held throughout the year including the annual Azalea Festival in the spring and Riverfest in the fall. The Azalea Festival is held in the Historic District where azaleas and oleanders abound. Many of the homes have extensive gardens and are opened to the public during the event.
If you’re looking to visit some local attractions, then be sure to check out the USS North Carolina battleship. Noted as one of the top tourist attractions in the area, the USS North Carolina was active from 1941 to 1947 and was involved in every major naval offensive in the Pacific area of operations. If you’re looking to participate in a different kind of aquatic tour, consider checking out the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. Residents and visitors alike enjoy easy access to miles of wide, white sandy beaches at nearby Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) running parallel to the Atlantic Ocean provides boaters with many recreational opportunities with numerous docking and marina facilities.
The spirit of the citizens can also be seen in the number of cultural facilities located in the larger urban area. Thalian Hall hosts a number of wonderful productions, both musical and dramatic. The Studio Theater produces Avant-garde, experimental theater and adult comedies. The Community Arts Center offers classes and sponsors productions for adults and children. Downtown Wilmington also houses many art galleries and music shops.
